Growing potatoes from seeds is not in demand among the majority of gardeners. Only experimenters risk doing this. But it's for nothing, because thanks to biological seeds, you can grow elite potatoes.
Popular among farmers are the Farmer, Milena, Revenge and Ilona varieties, the seeds of which are planted at the end of March. The basic rule is to sow pre-soaked seeds and only those that have hatched.
The seeds are moistened with warm water when they are spread out on gauze, then they are covered from above and put in a warm place. When the seed hatches, it is planted in prepared soil, which is made from humus, peat, sand and garden soil in equal proportions. It is convenient to use cassettes for seedlings. Since the seeds are very small, it is recommended to use a toothpick soaked in water to plant them, with which only one sprouted seed is planted in each well, deepening it by 1-1.5 cm.
Planting does not occur at the same time, but within 5-7 days, as new germinated seeds appear. After filling all the holes, the planting is covered with a film for several days and placed in heat.
It should be borne in mind that the emerging shoots will be miniature. When the sprouts germinate, they are as thin as sewing threads, no more than 1-3 cm high. As they grow, they thicken. If the location allows, then fertile soil can be poured into each well of the cassette.
You can plant such seedlings in the garden at the end of May, after they become full-fledged plants with several real leaves, measuring 7-10 cm. You need to plant the bushes at a distance, as when planting potatoes with tubers. It is advisable to add a handful of humus to each well. The holes are neither deep nor wide. To dig them out, you can use an ordinary garden shovel.
The planted area is covered with agrofibre, which should be stretched over low arcs. Watering is frequent and abundant. Plants respond well to top dressing with a growth stimulant. Special attention is paid to weeding and collecting Colorado potato beetles. With proper care, the planted bushes will catch up with those that were planted in the usual way and even bloom earlier. In the middle of summer, there will be no visual difference between them.
At the end of August, you can start to dig up the harvest. About 6-8 potatoes are harvested from each grown bush, i.e. about 10 kg of potatoes from 40 bushes. All the collected tubers should be left outside so that they turn green, and in the spring they can be planted.
Of course, not everyone has the patience, desire and strength to use this method of growing starch tubers, but if an adventurer and an experimenter lives deep in their hearts, and communication with the earth is enjoyable, then it's definitely worth a try.
